Vienna Layover Itinerary Roaming Atlas

Embarking on an exhilarating adventure from the US to Asia can be intimidating. Flights can last from 18 hours direct to 25-31 hours with layovers. However, I found a captivating alternative during my trip from NYC to Bangkok. I decided to take a thrilling detour in Vienna, Austria. It involved an overnight 8-hour flight and an 11-hour layover, transforming my journey into a delightful escapade.

My Actions during the Vienna Layover Itinerary…

I had abundant time to immerse myself in Vienna’s captivating food, architecture, and history. I indulged in delectable pastries, marveled at stunning landmarks, and delved into the city’s rich heritage. These experiences created cherished memories and sparked a newfound sense of wanderlust within me. Embrace the unexpected and allow Vienna’s enchantment to enhance your journey to Asia.

Vienna Layover Itinerary Tips

How much cash do I need for this Vienna Layover Itinerary?

Contrary to popular advice, I didn’t need cash while exploring Vienna. Exchanging currency at the airport proved costly, as $200 only yielded €150 instead of the market rate of $1.08. Instead, opt for alternative payment methods. Don’t forget to pack comfortable shoes and a stowaway backpack for a hassle-free and enjoyable adventure in Vienna.

What should I bring?

Traveling light is essential for an exciting layover adventure. Luckily, Vienna airport offers a convenient service to store my carry-on luggage for just €5. This is where the packable backpack becomes invaluable, allowing me to bring only the essentials for the day. With this practical solution, I was able to explore freely without being weighed down by unnecessary baggage.

How do I get to the city center?

In the past, the popular recommendation was to take the CAT (express Airport train to the city center) instead of the S7 (S-Bahn) in Vienna. This was due to the older train with less comfortable seating. However, Vienna has upgraded its S7, and now it offers a relatively comfortable journey. While the S7 is slightly slower by 7 minutes compared to the CAT, it provides a cost-saving of €10.60. Taking this into consideration, I highly recommend opting for the S7, as it offers a comfortable and budget-friendly travel experience.

What’s the delightful tipping custom in Vienna?

When dining in Vienna’s restaurants, it is customary to leave a tip ranging from 5-15% of the total bill, conveniently rounded up to the nearest whole number. For instance, if the bill amounts to €28.9, it is customary to round up to €30, while a bill of €15 would typically be rounded up to €17-€18. This practice ensures a fair and appreciated gesture of gratitude for the quality service provided which is called Trinkgeld.

Can I speak English in Vienna?

Yes, a vast majority of people are familiar with English and are approachable and friendly.

Is Vienna very expensive?

Vienna is relatively expensive compared to some other destinations. However, the city also offers a wide range of options to suit various budgets, so it’s possible to find both luxurious experiences and more affordable choices depending on your preferences.

The market is not just for shopping; it’s also a culinary destination with inviting cafes and restaurants serving flavors from around the world. Besides food, Naschmarkt features shops and boutiques offering vintage clothing and artisanal crafts. It’s a must-visit for food enthusiasts and cultural explorers looking to immerse themselves in Vienna’s vibrant atmosphere and diverse offerings.

Immersing myself in the local cuisine, I treated myself to a delightful dinner at Zur Eisernen Zeit. I relished the flavors of their renowned schnitzel, a Viennese specialty, perfectly paired with the refreshing Murauer Zwickl beer. The schnitzel, priced at €24, embodied the customary cost for this delectable dish, while the €5 beer added a refreshing touch. The harmonious combination of the mouthwatering meal and invigorating beverage culminated in a truly satisfying dining experience.

If you have lounge access, like a Priority Pass, make sure to visit the Sky Lounge for a convenient and relaxing experience. It’s located after the security check but before passport control. Learn from my experience and avoid the hassle of going through passport control multiple times and undergoing multiple security checks. The lounge is a pleasant way to end your day, although I was disappointed that the shower facilities were not available. I had been looking forward to refreshing myself with a shower before my next flight.
